🌀 morgana-anti-infinite-loop v2.0 (English)#

The anti-loop skill that heals instead of killing. v2.0 ships with 9 protection layers, one-line install, stdlib + numpy opt-in, and predicts loops 5–10 iterations before they happen.

Audience: solo developers, startups, researchers, and anyone running an LLM agent that occasionally loops. Philosophy: Monday-morning-ready — install on a Monday, get protection by the coffee break.

🎯 The problem#

Your LLM agent loops. It retries the same tool twelve times. It paraphrases the same question. It loses its original intent. It burns through 10,000 tokens to achieve nothing. You want it to stop looping — but you don't want it to die in the middle of a critical task.

v1 of this skill (a modest reception (a handful of downloads)) did nothing but max_iter + kill. It under-delivered.

v2.0 ships with 9 protection layers, predicts the loop 5–10 iterations in advance, and offers a remedy instead of a coffin.

🚀 Quickstart (5 minutes)#

Installation#

bash

# CORE: zero dependency (stdlib Python only)
pip install anti-loop

# Opt-in (fancy add-ons)
pip install anti-loop[embeddings]      # + numpy (TF-IDF fallback)
pip install anti-loop[kan] # + torch (KAN advanced)
pip install anti-loop[multi-agent] # + DFS deadlock graph
pip install anti-loop[all] # full power

Usage (3 lines, 30 seconds)#

python

from anti_loop import AntiLoop

# 1. Init
guard = AntiLoop(mode="heal", max_iter=10)

# 2. Wrap your agent
result = guard.observe(action, intent=user_intent)

# 3. React
if result["intervene"]:
    apply(result["directive"])  # heal / pause / abort

CLI#

bash

anti-loop --demo
# → Interactive demo: detects a loop in 2 iterations, proposes a heal

anti-loop --check-plan "if X then X"
# → ⚠️ 1 issue found: Tautology

anti-loop --stats
# → JSON: iteration, heal_count, known_loops, current_threshold

---

🔌 Opt-in extras#

anti-loop v2.0 is zero-dep by default. Everything fancy is opt-in via extras_require.

Rationale: a solo developer does not need torch (300 MB+). It loads only if you opt in.

🛡️ The 9 protection layers#

Layer 1 — Predictive Entropy (Shannon)#

• Complexity: O(N) sliding window.
• Cost: 0 tokens, ~0.1 ms, 0 CPU.
• Detects: entropy collapse 5–10 iterations before the loop.
• Principle: when Shannon entropy over the last N actions drops below a dynamic threshold, a loop precursor is on the way.
• Standalone usage:

python

from anti_loop import PredictiveEntropy
ent = PredictiveEntropy(threshold=0.3)
for action in agent_actions:
    e = ent.observe(action)
    if ent.is_collapse_imminent():
        print("⚠️ loop coming in 5–10 iterations")

Layer 2 — Novelty Detector (numpy cosine)#

• Complexity: O(N×D) where D = embedding dimension.
• Cost: ~1 ms per action with numpy.
• Detects: paraphrase + reformat (semantically identical, lexically different).
• Fallback: hash-based when numpy is not installed.
• Standalone usage:

python

from anti_loop import NoveltyDetector
det = NoveltyDetector(similarity_threshold=0.95)
novelty = det.observe("search for X")
if det.is_novelty_low():
    print("🔁 same action as before")

Layer 3 — Loop Taxonomy (4 types)#

• Types: verbatim, semantic, intent_drift, cyclic.
• Cost: ~0.01 ms per action.
• Why: an agent that loops can do so in four different ways, and each demands a different remedy.
• Standalone usage:

python

from anti_loop import LoopTaxonomy, LoopType
tax = LoopTaxonomy()
loop_type = tax.observe(action, intent)
# LoopType.VERBATIM, SEMANTIC, INTENT_DRIFT, or CYCLIC

Layer 4 — Healing Injector (3 modes)#

See the dedicated section below.

Layer 5 — Self-Tuning Thresholds (meta-loop without ML)#

• Mechanism: moving average over the last 100 cases. Too many false positives → loosen the threshold. Too many missed loops → tighten it.
• Cost: 0 (just deque and sum).
• Zero ML, zero framework. Pure stdlib.
• Standalone usage:

python

from anti_loop import SelfTuningThresholds
st = SelfTuningThresholds(initial_threshold=0.95)
for was_correct in feedback_stream:
    st.record(was_correct)
# st.threshold adjusts itself

Layer 6 — Breath-Rate Monitor (0 CPU, 0 RAM)#

• Mechanism: Δt between consecutive actions. If Δt collapses suddenly (drops below 30 % of the running mean), it is a physiological sign of a fast loop.
• Cost: 1 timestamp appended per action. That's it.
• Why: an agent that retries compulsively will call tools at a faster and faster pace, even when the actions "vary".

python

from anti_loop import BreathRateMonitor
br = BreathRateMonitor()
for _ in agent_steps:
    br.observe()
    if br.is_collapse():
        print("💨 breath collapsed → fast loop")

Layer 7 — Pre-Flight Regex (0 LLM, 0 tokens)#

• Patterns detected: tautologies ( if X then X), while without exit, retries without fallback, and similar structural issues.
• Cost: 0 (pure regex).
• Use case: before executing a plan, validate it. If a pre-loop is detected, ask the agent to reformulate.

python

guard = AntiLoop()
issues = guard.pre_flight("if X then X")
# → [{'issue': 'Tautology: ...', 'pattern': '...', 'severity': 'high'}]

Layer 8 — Loop DNA (SHA-256 fingerprint)#

• Mechanism: every resolved loop is recorded in ~/.anti_loop/loops.json with its SHA-256 hash.
• Cross-session: if you restart your agent tomorrow and it falls into the same loop, it is recognised immediately.
• Opt-in clawhub share: you can upload your anonymised DNA for community benefit (similar to virus signatures).

python

from anti_loop import LoopDNA
dna = LoopDNA()  # default: ~/.anti_loop/loops.json
dna.record(["search", "for", "X"], resolution="healed")
dna.is_known(["search", "for", "X"])  # True

Layer 9 — Cross-Harness Adapters (3 lines to plug in)#

See the dedicated section below.

💊 The 3 healing modes#

ModeBehaviorUse casedirective returnedheal (default)Injects a contextual system messageProduction, conversational agents{"action": "heal", "system_message": "..."}``pause``time.sleep(N)Background tasks, batch jobs{"action": "pause", "duration_seconds": 2.0}``hard_kill``raise / abortTests, critical edge cases, security{"action": "abort", "message": "..."}

Example — heal (the default, recommended mode)#

python

guard = AntiLoop(mode="heal", max_iter=10)
result = guard.observe("search for X", intent="find X")
# result["directive"] = {
#   "action": "heal",
# "system_message": "You seem to be going in circles on 'search for X'.
# Your original intent was 'find X'.
#                      Try a different approach.",
#   "should_continue": True,
#   "heal_count": 1
# }

Example — pause#

python

guard = AntiLoop(mode="pause", max_iter=10)
result = guard.observe("search for X", intent="find X")
# result["directive"] = {
#   "action": "pause",
#   "duration_seconds": 2.0,
# "message": "Loop detected, pausing 2.0s",
#   "should_continue": True
# }
# → time.sleep(2.0)

Example — hard_kill#

python

guard = AntiLoop(mode="hard_kill", max_iter=10)
result = guard.observe("search for X", intent="find X")
# result["directive"] = {
#   "action": "abort",
# "message": "Loop detected at iteration 5, aborting for safety"
# }
# → raise LoopAborted(...)

Recommendation: start with heal. Fall back to pause for batch jobs. Reserve hard_kill for safety-critical paths.

🔌 Cross-harness adapters (6 examples)#

Plug anti-loop into your favorite harness in three lines.

1. Anthropic Claude (raw HTTP)#

python

import anthropic
from anti_loop.adapters import ClaudeAdapter

client = anthropic.Anthropic()
adapter = ClaudeAdapter(guard=AntiLoop(mode="heal"))

response = adapter.run(
    client,
    model="claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Find the capital of France"}],
    max_tokens=1024,
)
# → response.text + guard.stats

2. OpenAI (Python SDK)#

python

import openai
from anti_loop.adapters import OpenAIAdapter

client = openai.OpenAI()
adapter = OpenAIAdapter(guard=AntiLoop(mode="heal"))

response = adapter.run(
    client,
    model="gpt-4o",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Find the capital of France"}],
)

3. Hermes (open-source LLM harness)#

python

from hermes import Hermes
from anti_loop.adapters import HermesAdapter

agent = Hermes(model="hermes-3-llama-3.1-70b")
adapter = HermesAdapter(guard=AntiLoop(mode="heal"))
adapter.wrap(agent)  # patches .step() / .think() / .act()

4. LangChain#

python

from langchain.agents import AgentExecutor
from anti_loop.adapters import LangChainAdapter

agent_executor = AgentExecutor(...)
adapter = LangChainAdapter(guard=AntiLoop(mode="heal"))
adapter.wrap(agent_executor)  # intercepts AgentExecutor._call()

5. AutoGen#

python

from autogen import AssistantAgent
from anti_loop.adapters import AutoGenAdapter

assistant = AssistantAgent(name="assistant", llm_config={...})
adapter = AutoGenAdapter(guard=AntiLoop(mode="heal"))
adapter.wrap(assistant)

6. Custom (your own agent)#

python

from anti_loop.adapters import CustomAdapter

def my_agent_step(state):
    # your agent logic
    return {"action": "...", "intent": "..."}

adapter = CustomAdapter(guard=AntiLoop(mode="heal"))
adapter.wrap_step(my_agent_step)
# → returns healed output, raises if hard_kill

Want a new adapter? Open an issue or PR on GitHub. Most adapters are 20–40 lines.

🔄 Migrating from v1#

v1 API → v2.0 API:

python

# v1 (old)
from anti_loop import Guard
guard = Guard(max_iter=10)
if guard.is_looping():
    raise Exception("loop")

# v2.0 (new)
from anti_loop import AntiLoop
guard = AntiLoop(mode="heal", max_iter=10)
result = guard.observe(action, intent)
if result["intervene"]:
    apply(result["directive"])

Breaking changes:

• Guard → AntiLoop (renamed for clarity)
• mode="kill" → mode="hard_kill" (3 modes now)
• is_looping() → guard.observe() returns a structured result
• max_iter=10 still works as the primary safety net

New in v2.0:

• 8 additional protection layers
• Healing (the default) instead of killing
• Cross-harness adapters (3 lines each)
• Loop DNA cross-session memory
• Self-tuning thresholds
• Pre-flight regex

---

🎓 Lessons learned#

1. Healing beats killing. A raise looks good in tests, but in production it kills momentum. A system message is a better default.
2. Predictive beats reactive. Catching a loop after 8 iterations is too late. Catching the entropy collapse 5–10 iterations before is the right move.
3. Zero-dep is a feature, not a limitation. Modest downloads on v1 happened despite the simplicity — not because of fancy features. People want something that just works.
4. Loop DNA is your long-term memory. Without it, the same loop is rediscovered every session. With it, the second occurrence is the last.
5. Cross-harness is a multiplier. 6 adapters for the price of one core. Each adapter is 20–40 lines; the value compounds.
6. Self-tuning avoids the "magic number" trap. Hard-coded thresholds bit-rots. A 100-sample moving average does not.
7. Pre-flight is cheap insurance. 0 LLM, 0 tokens, 0 ms. A 5-line regex catches entire classes of bad plans.
