HTTP Cache Audit#

Your Lighthouse score says "Serve static assets with an efficient cache policy." You have Cache-Control: no-store on your 2MB vendor.js because you copied an API middleware header.

This skill fetches response headers for your URLs, classifies each resource's caching behavior, identifies what should be cached but isn't, and generates the exact config lines for nginx/Apache/Cloudflare/Next.js.

Works against any URL via curl. Zero external API.

Step 4: Output Report#

## HTTP Cache Audit
Site: https://myapp.com | Resources checked: 23

---

### Summary

| Grade | Count | Examples |
|-------|-------|---------|
| 🔴 F (uncacheable/misconfigured) | 8 | vendor.abc123.js, app.def456.js |
| 🟠 C (partially correct) | 5 | logo.png, hero.webp |
| 🟡 B (minor issues) | 4 | fonts/inter.woff2 |
| ✅ A (correctly cached) | 6 | favicon.ico, og-image.png |

**Estimated cache performance impact: ~2.4MB re-downloaded on every page load**

---

### 🔴 Critical Issues

**vendor.abc123.js** — `Cache-Control: no-store`
- URL has content hash `abc123` → safe for long-term caching
- Every visitor re-downloads this 847KB file on every page load

**Fix:**
```nginx
location ~* \.[a-f0-9]{8,}\.(js|css)$ {
    add_header Cache-Control "public, max-age=31536000, immutable";
    expires 1y;
}
---
app.def456.js — No Cache-Control header
• Heuristic caching applied (browser guesses ~2 hours based on Last-Modified)
• CDN returning MISS on every request
Fix: Same nginx location block above.
---
🟠 Suboptimal Caching#
logo.png — Cache-Control: max-age=3600, public
• 1 hour TTL is very short for an infrequently-changing image
• This creates 24+ CDN misses per day per CDN edge node
Fix: Cache-Control: public, max-age=2592000 (30 days) Use filename versioning ( logo-v2.png) if you need instant invalidation.
---
fonts/inter.woff2 — Cache-Control: public, max-age=604800
• 7 days — fonts almost never change, should be 1 year
• Missing immutable directive
Fix: Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable
---
⚠️ Vary Header Warning#
/api/users — Vary: User-Agent, Accept-Encoding
• User-Agent in Vary creates thousands of cache variants in CDN
• Cloudflare/Fastly will not cache this endpoint effectively
Fix: Remove User-Agent from Vary: Vary: Accept-Encoding
---
Generated nginx Config#
nginx
# Static assets with content hash — immutable 1 year
location ~* \.[a-f0-9]{6,16}\.(js|css|woff2?)(\?.*)?$ {
    add_header Cache-Control "public, max-age=31536000, immutable";
    add_header Vary "Accept-Encoding";
    expires 1y;
}
# Images — 30 days
location ~* \.(png|jpg|jpeg|webp|avif|gif|svg|ico)$ {
    add_header Cache-Control "public, max-age=2592000";
    add_header Vary "Accept-Encoding";
    expires 30d;
}
# HTML — always revalidate
location ~* \.(html?)$ {
    add_header Cache-Control "no-cache";
}
# API — never cache
location /api/ {
    add_header Cache-Control "no-store";
}
Verify:
bash
curl -sI https://myapp.com/static/js/vendor.abc123.js | grep -i cache
# Should return: cache-control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable
# Should return: cf-cache-status: HIT (after Cloudflare warms up)
text
---
## Quick Mode Output
Cache Audit: https://myapp.com (23 resources)
🔴 8 resources with no-store or no Cache-Control on hashed static files → ~2.4MB re-downloaded every page load 🟠 5 resources with max-age too short (< 1 week for static assets) ✅ 6 resources correctly configured
Top fix: Add Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable to hashed JS/CSS → Estimated improvement: 2.4MB cached, ~600ms faster repeat visits
CDN status: 8 MISS, 6 HIT (Cloudflare) Vary issues: /api/users has Vary: User-Agent (prevents CDN caching)
