Language Hierarchy in UAE Clinics#

text

Emirati patients: Gulf Arabic (preferred) → Modern Standard Arabic
Arab expats: Modern Standard Arabic
South Asian patients: English + Hindi/Urdu if staff available
Western expats: English
East Asian patients: English (Mandarin if staff available)

Cultural Communication Standards#

• Formality: Always formal Arabic in written communications (Modern Standard Arabic / Fusha)
• Gender: Note patient gender; some female patients prefer female physician; respect and document preference
• Family involvement: UAE patients often want family present for diagnosis; this is culturally normal — note in records
• Religious considerations: Mention of diagnosis of serious illness — some families request physician inform them first before patient; handle sensitively

Translation Guidelines#

When translating clinical content:

text

✓ Use Modern Standard Arabic (Fusha) for written documents
✓ Gulf dialect acceptable for WhatsApp/informal messages to Emirati patients
✓ Medical terms: Arabic term first, then original term in brackets
  مثال: الزائدة الدودية (appendix)
✓ Medication names: use brand name (universally recognized)
✓ Avoid direct word-for-word translation — paraphrase for natural Arabic
✓ Have a native Arabic-speaking clinical colleague review before mass distribution
✗ Do not use Google Translate for consent forms or clinical instructions
✗ Do not use overly formal Quranic/archaic Arabic — modern standard is correct

---

Output Format#

For Arabic communications:

1. Produce both Arabic and English versions
2. Use Modern Standard Arabic (unless Gulf dialect is specifically requested)
3. Flag any cultural considerations
4. Include disclaimer for patient-facing clinical content
5. Mark template fields clearly with [brackets]
